Bar Spotlight On: Black Sheep Ale

Black Sheep Best Bitter was the first ever beverage brewed at the Black Sheep brewery in Masham, Yorkshire. It’s their best seller, and one of the best-selling session beers in the country. Brewed using the finest Maris Otter malted barley, Black Sheep Best Bitter provides an aroma of hops and malt, with a slightly peppery flavour and long, bitter finish.

This is a personal favourite of our bartender, Angus Egdell-Page, who describes it as “A heavy mild with a classic ale flavour. A favourite of the old timers. Thick, textured with a subtle aftertaste. A true taste of the Pennines in a glass.”

Black Sheep Best Bitter is a perfect match for red meat, it’s peppery undertones complimenting beef or lamb especially. You could try adding it to a stew or pie to add depth of flavour, or mixing it into gravy to create a wonderful accompaniment for any meaty dish.

At The Fleece Inn, Black Sheep Best Bitter is a firm favourite of the locals, and is also used in our popular steak and ale pie! We always have it on tap, so feel free to pop in and try this Yorkshire classic for yourself!
